Bowling and Bowl Games
I put the bowl in BowlQuest on the biggest day of games.
Penn State vs. Memphis
Two games on at the same time so I started with the Cotton Bowl. It took both teams a few series to warm up and then it was a shootout. The most points in the first half and game total. You don't think of Penn State and shootout together but their running game lead by Journey Brown (best name of BowlQuest contender) was unstoppable.
Penn State 53 Memphis 39
My Pick: Penn State
Game Notes
Journey Brown had one touchdown run where at least half the Memphis defense tried to drag him down and he threw them around like rag dolls.
What Did I Eat: Small bag of Hen In The Woods Red Vinegar potato chips.
Bowl Swag: It's a secret
Notre Dame vs. Iowa State
The first time these two teams have played each other. I had no interest in this one, so it was the second quarter and done.
Didn't miss much, Notre Dame took care of business on a wet field in Orlando.
Notre Dame 33 Iowa State 9
My Pick: Notre Dame
My bet: I tried a parlay with the two early games, lost thanks to the Cyclones.
Game Notes
While I'm not fan of the Irish this was an underwhelming bowl game destination for a two-loss team. They could easily have just shown up but they looked sharp from what I saw.
What Did I Eat: Nothing
Bowl Swag: $400 Best Buy gift card, Herschel backpack with luggage tag. Nice and simple.
With the required quarters in the books, it was time for my sons and I to have our annual Man Day, where we go out for some activity and dining. This year we chose bowling and bowl games at a sports bar. At Fairfield Lanes, after winning the first two games, Son No. 1 had to get one over on the old man.
Despite my terrible photography you can see that Brad beat Dad by two pins. Those two frames with six pins killed me. Still not too bad for someone who hasn't bowled in years. Son No.2, who stands 6'8" didn't fare so well - hard to get the ball down consistently from that far up.
Next stop, Rick's Tavern.
This is the first Man Day where everyone is of legal age so we had some beers and bar food waiting on the Peach Bowl.
LSU vs. Oklahoma
We were back from Rick's while this first half of the playoffs was still in the first quarter. We watched all the way through the first half and went back and forth in the second because there wasn't much to see.
If there was any doubt which team was No. 1, LSU took care of that with a beat down of the Sooners. There is also no question who the Bengals should take with the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft. Joe Burrow buried Oklahoma with seven first half touchdown passes. The Tigers scored at will.
LSU 63 Oklahoma 28
My Pick: LSU
My Bet: LSU -7 in the first half. I should have bet a lot more than I did.
Game Notes
There are a lot of people who want more teams in the playoff, this game showed exactly why that argument is wrong. If the 4th ranked team gets pummeled why would we need to see four more teams involved? Sure, Alabama would probably have put up a better effort than Oklahoma but no team was beating LSU.
What Did I Eat: Fried pickle chips at Rick's
Bowl Swag: $390 Vanilla Visa gift card, fossil watch, football.
Clemson vs. Ohio State
It's going to be hard to beat this one for game of bowl season. It was maybe the hardest hitting game I've seen in a long time. I was in the for the full game here.
Ohio State started strong behind the running of J.K. Dobbins but Buckeye fans had to worry when they settled for a couple field goals instead of getting in the end zone. The Tigers woke up in the second quarter and it was game on.
The play that Ohio State fans will complain about for years was the overturned fumble call on a what would have been a pick six. The officials said the Clemson player never had control of the ball. Was it the right call, maybe not but don't settle for field goals instead of touchdowns. Also, Ohio State had the lead with three minutes to play. You can't let Clemson march right down the field or let Trevor Lawrence run for over 100 yards and a long score.
Clemson 29 Ohio State 23
My pick: Clemson, 4-for-4 on the day, record now 16-6 and into first place in the bowl pool.
My bet: Not so good, I took the over at 62.
Game Notes
The Buckeyes post game meal was pizza, Papa John's to be specific, the same pizza Urban Meyer ate after losing to Michigan State in the Big Ten Championship in 2013.
Urban was on the Ohio State sideline at the Fiesta Bowl, he's still on the Ohio State payroll.
What Did I Eat: Some cheese straws, homemade by Son No. 2. I also had a few Wild Turkey Manhattans.
Bowl Swag: PlayState PS4 gift package, Fossil watch, Ogio Shuttle Back backpack, that football book again, Ice Shaker insulated bottle.
You didn't think I was going to let a Clemson/Ohio State game happen without this video?
So we have Tigers vs. Tigers in the National Champions game on January 13th in New Orleans. The bowl games return Monday with four games. Really, four games?
