Top 10 Bowl Games
If, unlike me, you have a life and have no interest in watching 39 bowl games, here are my picks for the Top 10 games.
10. Cheez-It Bowl, Air Force vs. Washington State, Dec. 27, 10:15pm. I put this one on here because it was easily one of the most entertaining games last year thanks to how utterly bizarre the game was. There were at least seven turnovers and the final score was 17-10 in overtime. Any game involving Washington State coach Mike Leach is usually worth your time.
9. Cotton Bowl, Penn State vs. Memphis, Dec. 28th, 12pm. Your appetizer before the playoff games. I like this match up of schools that may never have played before. Or maybe they have, I'm not looking it up. Penn State fan feels like they should have been in the Rose Bowl, too bad. Mike Norvelle left Memphis to take the head coaching job at Florida State.
8. Camping World Bowl, Notre Dame vs. Iowa State, Dec. 28th, 12pm. The other appetizer game before the playoffs. Really some stupid scheduling against the Cotton Bowl. If Penn State fan feels snubbed, Notre Dame fan is downright glum. Two good quarterbacks in this one.
7. Sugar Bowl, Georgia vs. Baylor, Jan. 1st, 8:45pm. Baylor was the surprise team of 2019 while Georgia fell flat, especially with the loss to South Carolina. If both teams show up to play, could be a lot of fun.
6. Outback Bowl, Minnesota vs. Auburn, Jan. 1st, 1pm. Row The Boat vs. War Eagle. The Golden Gophers ran out of gas at the end of the season but P.J. Fleck should have them revved up for a New Year's Day game. Auburn knocked Alabama out of the playoff for the first time, so good on them.
5. Rose Bowl, Oregon vs. Wisconsin, Jan. 1st, 5pm. You should watch just because it's the Rose Bowl, the most beautiful surface to play football on. Oregon knocked Utah out of contention for the playoff while the Badgers made things interesting for Ohio State in the Big 10 game.
4. Holiday Bowl, USC vs. Iowa, Dec. 27th, 8pm. This is probably ranked too high but it's Iowa quarterback Nate Stanley's 274th game for the Hawkeyes so make sure to see him one last time. Southern Cal started off terrible but was good down the stretch. Good uniforms here too. Seriously, I think Nate Stanley is 36 years old, pictured here.
Wait, I'm being told that is actually George Blanda.
3. Citrus Bowl, Alabama vs. Michigan, Jan. 1st, 1pm. Both teams were preseason picks to be in the playoff. Instead they're playing each in Orlando in the early game on New Year's Day. Saban's bunch may come out disinterested like they did pre-playoff in the Sugar Bowl against Utah. Harbaugh's underachievers get the honor of probably getting throttled by the Tide after being humiliated by Ohio State in Ann Arbor. 38% of the coverage of this game will be sideline shots of the head coaches.
2. Peach Bowl, LSU vs. Oklahoma, Dec. 28th, 4pm. First of the two playoff games. I'm not sure you need more incentive to watch than that except for the fact you'll likely hear Boomer Sooner so many times you'll think of puncturing an ear drum. LSU is favored so quarterback Joe Burrow will likely get one more game with the Tigers before joining a different group of tigers.
1. Fiesta Bowl, Ohio State vs. Clemson, Dec. 28th, 8pm. There is no way the Buckeyes are going to get rolled like the last time these two teams played, right? I don't think they will, too many good skill players and Chase Young should make things challenging for Trevor Lawrence. I'm a Big 10 guy so I hope the Bucks win to get to the title game, and I'm kind of tired of Dabo.

thankfully, you are not subjecting anyone else to the MSU/Wake game. thanks for taking that bullet for us.
ReplyDeleteI'm still having issues after watching last year's Red Box Bowl.
