Frisco Bowl

What a glorious way to spend a Friday night, with a bowl game from Frisco, Texas and another round of MACtion. If you're a fan of MAC football this weekend is for you.

Utah State vs. Kent State

I was home from work in plenty of time to settle in and get ready for what I thought would be a dud of a game. Kent State had to win three straight to become bowl eligible and Utah State has quarterback Jordan Love. Love is a certain NFL draft pick who was cleared to play after getting accused of a marijuana charge in Utah.

It turns out both defenses were playing like they were high. This was a track meet and the two offenses never tired.  39 points were scored in the fourth quarter, 25 by the Golden Flashes. This game was so long I fell asleep before the end.  There were some wacky plays including a 20 yard punt that appeared to be on purpose.

Kent State 51  Utah State 41  This was Kent State's first ever bowl win. The Golden Flashes three previous bowl appearances were losses in the 1972 Tangerine Bowl, the 2013 GoDaddy.com Bowl and of course the 1954 Refrigerator Bowl. Kent lost that game 19-7 to Delaware in Evansville, Indiana. Evansville was important to refrigerator manufacturing and hosted bowl games for nine years. And you thought going to Frisco, Texas wasn't glamorous.

My pick:  Utah State

My best:  $5 on the under at 71.5.  Not even close.

Game notes

This game would be lot cooler if Jack Wagner was somehow involved.

You'll remember Jack as Frisco Jones on General Hospital. Maybe have an ad with Jack swigging a Tropical Smoothie or two. Also, while texting with my son about the game, it turns out there are five Tropical Smoothie Cafes in the Cincinnati area.  I've never had any inclination to have a smoothie. My son described them as thick and full of protein. I'll stick with coffee.

What did I eat:  Not a smoothie, although I guess you drink that. Pretzel Crisps and some cheddar cheese spread. Maybe if there were a cheddar cheese smoothie I'd try that.

Bowl Swag:  Justin cowboy hat, football, college football 150 anniversary coin, lapel pin, Blingware cup and beanie.  I think we're going to see insulated cups as the go-to swag bag item this year.

There are six games today, I need to make sure I've got fresh batteries in the TV remote.
