The Wall
Yup, hitting the wall of bowl game watching with four games on Monday. Even my wife came into the family room and said "Aren't you sick of these games?" Yes, yes I am and so are you based on page views. Never the less, four more in the books.
Western Kentucky vs. Western Michigan
When both teams have Western in their name it's a good sign there is no need for this game. It was a telling sign last year when bad weather cancelled this game in the first quarter. Unfortunately no such luck this go around with plenty of sunshine and a miniscule crowd in Dallas.
All you need to know is that the threat of overtime hung over this game until Western Michigan had too many players on the field on the last play, giving the Hilltoppers an extra play to kick the winning field goal.
WKU 23 WMU 20
My pick: Western Kentucky
My bet: The over at 55. I was sort of rooting for overtime, sort of.
Game Notes
-This was Western Michigan's 10th bowl game loss, their record 1-10 in bowls, the worst in the FBS.
-I went to Costco prior to the game and there may have been more people in the store than at this game.
-Western Kentucky's top receiver is Lucky Jackson, the same name as Elvis' character in Viva Las Vegas. At this point we can all use some Ann-Margret.
-What Did I Eat: A turkey sandwich with some Doritos.
-Bowl Swag:: Gift suite, Parkland duffle bag, football, Nine Line Apparel patriotic athletic wear.
Mississippi State vs. Louisville
One of two games on at the same time in the afternoon. The Bulldogs got on the board before the Cardinals, in the midst of a turnaround season, took over.
There was an awful call resulting in an ejection of a Louisville player which seemed to fire up the Cards. There is no rhyme or reason to NCAA officiating.
I watched the first quarter and then moved on to the other game. I checked in a few times during the second half.
Louisville 38 Mississippi State 28
My pick: Mississippi State
Game Notes
-Usually the Mississippi State fans and their cowbells take over their bowl games but the short drive from Louisville to Nashville had the Cards fans out in force.
-What Did I Eat: Nothing
-Bowl Swag: Gift suite, Fossil watch - meh.
Illinois vs. California
I switched from Nashville to Santa Clara to catch the second quarter. This was the game that prompted my wife's "aren't you tired of these games" comment.
There wasn't much here to hold my interest here, although it was better than the game between Oregon and Michigan State last year.
Cal 35 Illinois 20
My pick: Cal
My bet: A two team parlay that I got wrong on both ends. I go to Covers.com for betting advice, that probably stops. They were wrong on every account for these games.
Game Notes:
This was Cal's first bowl win in four seasons.
Instead of a normal coin toss, being the Red Box Bowl, the choice was "movies" or "games" with a special Redbox coin.
What Did I Eat: The last of the homemade cheese straws and then dinner, left over prime rib from Christmas Eve, it needed to go.
Bowl Swag: Nintendo Switch Lite, Nixon watch, Turtle Beach gaming headphones, Herschel Supply Co. backpack, Goodr sunglasses. At least they're trying here unlike the Music City Bowl.
Florida vs. Virginia
Have you ever gone to one of those Brazilian all you can eat meat restaurants?
If the answer is yes, you know that feeling of hitting the meat wall, where you turn your card over from green to red for the final time. That's how I am with these games right now.
I did stick around for the first half to see Florida take a 24-14 half time lead and went to bed. As it would turn out, I went to bed way too early because I was up at 5am today. At least I didn't watch the second half.
Florida 38 Virginia 28
My Pick: Florida, now 19-7 and in first place in the bowl pool.
My Bet: Florida -7 in the first half. I doubled down on this bet and came out even on the day. No advice from Covers.com.
-This was the first time these teams have played in 60 years. The Gators won the 1959 meeting 55-10.
-What Did I Eat: nothing
-Bowl Swag: Gift suite, Tourneau watch, full sized split helmet.
There are five games today to say goodbye to 2019. There are reports of a scuffle between Kentucky and Virginia Tech players at a Belk Bowl team event at the Charlotte Motor Speedway Monday. It took until game 27 to get a BowlQuest beef.
