Last Bowl Games of the Decade

Five games to wrap up 2019. For whatever reason I woke up at 5am, guess I couldn't wait for the last day of the year and decade. Here's a quick rip through the action.

Kentucky vs. Virginia Tech

Bowl game beef alert!  The two teams got into an altercation at a pre-game event at the Charlotte Motor Speedway Saturday.  The beef carried over to the pre-game warm ups where Kentucky quarterback Lynn Bowden took a a swing at a Virginia Tech player. Because the punch took place before the official warm up time, Bowden couldn't be kicked out of the game. Got all that? Good thing for Kentucky, because Bowden tore it up.

Bowden ran 34 times for 233 yards, two touchdowns and threw the game winning touchdown with seconds left. Virginia Tech tried one of those multiple lateral plays at the end that wound up with a Kentucky scoop and score.

Kentucky 37  Virginia Tech 30

My pick:  Virginia Tech

My bet:  Virginia Tech -2.5, thought I was going to hang on for the win.

Game Notes

This was the final game for VT defensive coordinator Bud Foster. ESPN has had a love affair with Foster for whatever reason and had a camera trained on him through the past 25 years - and this game.

What Did I Eat:  Some left over macaroni and cheese

Bowl Swag:  Shopping trip to a Belk department store, Wenger watch.  This is Belk's final go around as sponsor of this game.

Florida State vs. Arizona State

It's a quick rip through the rest of these games.  I switched to the Sun Bowl to get the first quarter in, the game now sponsored by Kellogg's and their Tony The Tiger initiative for youth sports.

A mistake filled first half and I didn't stick around for any more. CBS only has one bowl game and this is it. Too bad, they do a nice job of producing games.

Arizona State 20  Florida State 14

My pick:  Arizona State

My bet:  Arizona State, -3.5, my only win of the day.

What Did I Eat:  Nothing, although I made some classic onion chip dip with Lipton soup for later in the evening.

Bowl Swag:  Gift suite, Timely Watch Company watch, Majestic fleece pullover, Ogio backpack, New Era cap, coin.

Navy vs. Kansas State

Once again, the first quarter of this game that I had no interest in. None of the games lived up to the action of the Belk Bowl.

Another game with a running quarterback taking over the game, this time Navy's Malcolm Perry who ran for 213 yards. So, two games today where the defense knew that the opponent's quarterback was going to run a majority of the plays and couldn't stop him.

Navy 20  Kansas State 17

My pick:  Navy

My bet:  A two team parlay with the Arizona Bowl that didn't pay out.

What Did I Eat:  Nothing

Bowl Swag:  Bass Pro Shops shopping trip, Bose Soundlink Color Bluetooth speaker, Caravelle by Bulova
watch, Nike athletic shoes, sport sandals, backpack and sunglasses, football.

Wyoming vs. Georgia Southern

Why? One quarter on the CBS Sports Network and done. This game is played in the University of Arizona's stadium and they don't bother to change the UA logos. It looks like a Wildcats home game.

Wyoming 38  Georgia Southern 17

My Pick:  Wyoming

After the game fans were invited to head to Tuscon's Times Square for the giant pinata drop at midnight.

Hopefully it was full of candy, or tacos.

What Did I Eat:  Again, nothing although I did make a shrimp boil and a quart of shrimp stock.

Bowl Swag:  Gift suite, Herschel supply company Chapter travel kit, New Era insulate beanie. Insulated, ahhh.

No. 11 Utah vs. Texas

Utah was totally outplayed. I stuck around for the first half, nothing to see here. Just think, Utah was a win away over Oregon in the PAC 12 Championship game from being destroyed by LSU. The Utes had no interest in this game, that can be the only reason they played so poorly against a Texas team that wasn't very good all year.

I'm sure Texas fans will handle this win over a top 15 teams in stride.

Texas 38  Utah 10

My Pick:  Utah, the record sits at 22-9, still in first place in the bowl pool.

My Bet:  Utah -2.5, not a good day.

What Did I Eat:  New Year's Eve food - the already mentioned chip dip, shrimp, cheese and sausage. To be transparent, I didn't each much of any of it. New Year's Eve is not a night we care about that much.

Turning off this game, I checked out the TV networks New Year's Eve programming.  NBC, ABC and Fox all have music oriented shows that start at 8pm, break for local news and then come back for the ball drop. CNN has Anderson Cooper taking a break from his newscaster job, drinking tequila with Andy Cohen and more or less making a fool of himself.

I have never got this show, it must be something in Cooper's contract that he gets to be drunk in front of the nation one night a year and then act like it never happened.  Anyhow, I went to bed well before midnight for the first time in at least 30 years and got a good night's sleep.

Hopefully today's games are better - Citrus, Outback, Rose and Sugar Bowls. And then there are still more bowl games Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Monday. I'm sure those will all be terrific.
